Pressure-treated lumber is widely used in outdoor construction to prevent wood rot. However, the chemicals used in the treatment process can accelerate corrosion in certain fasteners. This guide explains how different screw materials respond to pressure-treated lumber – and which ones are approved for structural use.

What Is Pressure-Treated Lumber?

Wood is pressure-treated for use where moisture is present, particularly in projects with ground contact. Today, copper azole and alkaline copper quaternary (ACQ) are the most common preservatives. While these chemicals protect wood from decay, they aggressively corrode metal fasteners.

How Do Zinc & Galvanized Screws Respond?

  • Electroplated zinc: Thin coating – corrodes quickly. Not recommended.

  • Hot-dipped galvanized: Thicker coating – provides moderate corrosion resistance. This is the only zinc-based coating approved for use in pressure-treated lumber.

However, even hot-dipped galvanized screws will corrode over time in treated wood. The thicker coating only delays the process.

How Do Stainless Steel Screws Respond?

Stainless steel is the best option for pressure-treated lumber. Unlike zinc or galvanized coatings, stainless steel does not rely on a surface layer – its corrosion resistance is built into the metal itself. The International Building Code (IBC) approves all stainless steel fasteners for use in pressure-treated lumber.

Critical Warning: Do Not Mix Metals

Hot-dipped galvanized and stainless steel screws should never be used together in pressure-treated lumber. When dissimilar metals contact each other in the presence of moisture (an electrolyte), galvanic corrosion occurs – and the galvanized fastener will corrode rapidly.

Other Approved Options
